Slide-scanning performed by yourself or by others?

If you finally decide on digitizing your slides, the question will arise whether you should do it yourself or instead let professionals do the work for you. The following summarized article should help you make your decision.

Scanning old slides will save your old memories, secure them for next generations, and simplify duplications.

You can choose between handing over the work to a professional like DIAFIX or instead get the job done by yourself at your domestic computer.

The only possibility to digitize slides by yourself requires a slide-scanner.

For you, we have tested several slide-scanners for home use in a large-scale test. The following model range has been tested:

A summary of the series of test can be found HERE.

The subsequent listed articles should help you to make your decision regarding scanning yourself or letting others do the work for you:

Costs

For several services, it is usually way less expensive to take care of them yourself. Therefore, it might be obvious that digitizing your collection of slides on your own would be preferable. However, if you strive for high quality of the scanned pictures, you usually will have to pay circa 1,000€ for a slide-scanner.

DIAFIX will digitize more than 5,300 slides in premium quality or even 12,500 slides in budget quality for just 1,000€.

If your collection of slides isn’t that big (e.g. 1,000 slides), you will only have to pay 120€ for budget quality and 230€ for premium quality

As the saying is time is money and as this applies to many people, we will examine the time exposure of slide-scanning in the following article.

Time exposure

The single-handed slide-scanning is associated with an enormous amount of time. Depending on the type of scanner, the slides have to be scanned individually, in tracks up to five slides, or in complete slide magazines. The average scanning-time in our slide-scanning test add up to 2.5 minutes per slide. If you have to scan every slide individually, the scanning of 100 slides will last for more than five hours.

The above mentioned scanning of 5,300 slides would take circa 220 hours and even 520 hours for 12,500 slides.

In addition, many slides are usually slightly dusty. If you even have to clean each slide individually before scanning, you will get an impression of how long it will take you to digitize your whole collection of slides…

DIAFIX will relieve you of the enormous time exposure while doing the scanning for you in a very high quality and for an invincible price.

Quality of image

Unfortunately, the quality of images in our our scanning test has only been satisfying in the very high-priced sector. The average measured dpi-number totalled up to 2,700. This number lies below the lowest quality level which DIAFIX offers you.

The consumer has to decide whether he wants to spend such an enormous amount of time and money in order to get an only moderate quality.

Our overview makes it clear: Scanning on the domestic computer won’t convince you regarding costs, time exposure, and quality of image.
